Why should you drink alkaline water?

Why should you drink alkaline water?

An alkaline diet has been linked to total body health and wellbeing and it stems from the science that abnormal cells thrive in an acidic environment but cannot survive in an alkaline one.

It has been shown that by choosing alkaline foods - think of your leafy greens - and ensuring you have quality alkaline hydration, health can be gradually improved. Here are our top reasons to switch your regular drinking water to alkaline water:

1. It brings balance back to the body.

Unlike regular water which has a neutral pH of 7, alkaline water has a higher pH between 8 and 9, and more specifically alk water has a pH of 9.5. Recent science has shown us that the more alkaline a substance, the better it is for your body working to improve mental and physical health.

Abnormal cells thrive in an acidic environment and many acidic foods are the highly processed and sugar loaded ones - think of sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks and alcohol. When we consume these foods in substantial quantities, we’re encouraging an acidic environment within our bodies. By drinking alkaline water, we’re working to neutralise the acid and reduce the replication of these abnormal cells by bringing balance back into the body.

2. It allows for quality hydration

Water is essential for human survival, but what many people don’t consider is the quality of water being consumed. Hydration levels in the blood are measured through ‘blood viscosity’. Therefore, low blood viscosity accounts to low hydration levels. Alkaline water is much more hydrating when compared to regular water as it is high quality, ionised water. It has also been purified, eliminating the dissolved waste which makes its way into our everyday water supply. These include heavy metals and micro-contaminants including aluminium, copper and even pesticides. By drinking alkaline water, hydration levels remain at a higher level, compared to the sharp drop when drinking regular water.

3. It reduces signs of ageing

Ageing is a fact of life, but looking your age or older than you are is not. There are many contributing factors to the ageing process including cellular and hormonal ageing, sun exposure and lifestyle choices; most notably our diets.

Alkaline water not only flushes out toxins and pathogens to slow down the ageing process, but it penetrates the skin cells with its quality hydration having a significant impact on the production of collagen and therefore skin elasticity. In the same manner, the skin’s appearance - its vitality and radiance - is also improved. The ultra-hydrating properties and powerful antioxidants of alkaline water filter out free radicals, keeping the body’s cellular structure strong and healthy.

4. It increases energy levels

Too much acidity in the body has been linked to an increase in fatigue and a loss of energy and as detailed above, much of this acidity comes from sugar, saturated fats and highly processed foods.

Acidity however, can also come in the form of an organic acid and we can see this in the build-up of lactic acid following a workout. Alkaline water speeds up muscle recovery, reducing this build-up of lactic acid and allowing the body to perform at its best for longer. It also contributes to increased cognitive function, focus and attention. Just as we see signs of dehydration when water loss outweighs water intake, we see signs of prolonged focus and quicker response time with superior hydration.
